COSMOS is an intensive four-week summer residential Pre-College Program for high school students who have demonstrated an aptitude for academic and professional careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects. Talented and motivated students completing grades 8-12 have the opportunity to work with renowned faculty, researchers, and scientists in state-of-the-art facilities while exploring advanced STEM topics far beyond the courses usually offered in California high schools. COSMOS fosters its students’ interests, skills, and awareness of educational and career options in STEM fields through challenging curricula that are both hands-on and lab-intensive.
Students apply to ONE of the four University of California’s COSMOS campuses — UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, and UC Santa Cruz. While each campus employs the best practices in STEM education, each program's curriculum builds on its faculty and host campus's unique teaching and research expertise. Each campus can only accommodate about 160-200 participants. The selection is competitive. A typical COSMOS student has a GPA of 3.5 or above. In addition, students must have achieved academic excellence.

The Berkeley Summer Computer Science Academy is a rigorous 2-week experience designed for motivated students between ages 16 and 17 who are interested in computer science, and wish to gain an excellent understanding of college-level student life. This summer academy is designed for all students regardless of previous coding experience; students will be assigned to one of two groups based on their prior coding experience. Students will experience immersion in coding, powerful computer science concepts, collaborative programming, and problem-solving. The Academy is based on the world-renowned Beauty and Joy of Computing (BJC) curriculum—the introductory computer science course that Berkeley undergraduates take—and is developed by UC Berkeley Computer Science Teaching Professor Dan Garcia, with day-to-day instruction provided by UC Berkeley BJC veteran teachers. Academy participants will take part in an intense, rewarding series of unique coding challenges every day using Snap!, a visual programming language. Participants will explore the core “big ideas” of computer science, going from an introduction to computing and coding languages to pursuing a programming project of their own design and interest. Your summer residential experience begins with orientation sessions, an interactive campus tour, and opportunities to meet with program staff and other participants. Activities and excursions are planned by UC Berkeley undergraduate Resident Assistants and Mentors (RAMs) and the program staff to help you meet other students in your program, make the most out of your time at Berkeley, and prepare for your future college experience.

UCode began in Manhattan Beach, CA. in 2009 and found a receptive group of families who supported us in the early days. The business took a step forward when Elon Musk asked us to teach his sons to code and then invited us to set up the coding and math programs at the SpaceX School. Shortly thereafter, we merged with a coding academy who had been working on curriculum with faculty at Cornell University’s Engineering School. The focus was on building computational skills in early learners. We loved that! Today, most of our students study online. We have small class sizes and honestly there has been no fall off in learning versus in-person programs. We have the data.
