Didn't Get the IB Diploma? Don't Panic: Guide to University Applications
Failing to reach the IB diploma passing score doesn't block your path to university. Here's what you can do:
1. Check Your Options:
Individual Subject Grades: Even without the diploma, strong scores in specific subjects may meet university entrance requirements.
UK: You may still be able to apply through using Tariff Points. You may still be able to use your individual IB scores and other exams to qualify for admission. You can calculate your score using the UCAS Tariff calculator.
US High School Diploma: If you still meet the qualifications for the US diploma through MSA, you may be eligible based on those grades. However, this will normally need to paired alongside IB certificates and/or SAT scores. These will differ by university/program, so you should reach out to them to ask their requirements.
University Entrance Requirements: Research the specific universities you applied to. Some might accept applications with strong individual grades even without the full diploma.
Here is a list of some university programs in Europe which accept non-IB students.
2. Contact Universities:
Be upfront about your results and highlight your strengths (individual subject scores, extracurriculars). This is not definite, but may add context to your scores and allow them to qualify you for admission.
3. Explore Alternative Options:
Foundation Programs: Some universities offer foundation programs as an alternative entry point. These may also be a good idea to help prepare you for university in general. You can use the Intl Foundation tool on UniFrog to help you find these programs.
Gap Year: Consider a gap year to improve your academic profile or gain relevant experience.
